A.I. Meets the Depth We Have Been Missing

Human depth – or its absence – did not arrive with A.I. It has always been present in health, leadership, education, relationships, conflict, and meaning — often beyond what our concepts and measurements could adequately capture.

A.I. can enormously amplify our present ways of mishandling these domains. Yet it may also help us finally work more positively with some of the depth we have been missing.

The depth was already there

Medicine distinguishes diseases and mechanisms. Psychology distinguishes patterns of behavior. Organizations distinguish functions and competencies. Education distinguishes learning outcomes. Diplomacy distinguishes interests and positions. Such distinctions have enabled enormous progress.

Yet open-complex human realities do not necessarily respect the boundaries of our concepts. As explored in About the (In)visibility of Coherence, there is a reason why the deeper organization may remain hard to notice: we readily see what coherence produces, while the coherence itself disappears behind its success. On top of this comes a second invisibility. Institutions naturally focus on what can be conceptualized, categorized, measured, and managed. What lies between or underneath the categories may receive less attention.

This does not make the categories wrong. It makes the whole larger. The depth we have been missing is therefore not a mysterious layer somewhere underneath ordinary reality. It is the richer coherence of the same reality we already encounter every day.

The visible problems are immense

Unfortunately, what remains insufficiently understood does not remain without consequences. Chronic illness, psychosomatic suffering, burnout, depression, addiction, loneliness, organizational dysfunction, polarization, educational disengagement, and a broader crisis of meaning are present on an enormous scale.

The numbers make the stakes tangible. Lisa’s Job in Numbers brings together global figures involving hundreds of millions of people and, in several domains, more than a billion. Even if deeper mind-related patterns prove relevant to only part of this suffering, better understanding them may have far-reaching consequences.

Moreover, depth matters not only because of what goes wrong. Missing depth can mean missing possibilities for growth: creativity that does not emerge, relationships that remain stuck, organizations that function below their potential, conflicts that appear insoluble, people who never discover what might have helped them from inside.

Healthcare makes this tangible

Modern medicine has achieved extraordinary results through increasingly precise observation and intervention. Yet complexity-related conditions often cross the borders that specialization necessarily creates.

The Meaningful Immune System explores this in immunology. A concept such as ‘stress’ may be far too coarse. Similar-looking stress can carry very different meanings in different people and at different moments. These differences may matter biologically. The scientific question is not whether everything is psychological, but which deeper patterns matter, for whom, under which circumstances, and through which pathways.

A.I. can make present healthcare vastly more efficient while leaving this deeper question untouched. It might even scale existing blind spots. Something like Lisa-as-Mind opens another possibility: meaningful longitudinal dialogue can be explored alongside clinical evolution, physiology, immunology, wearables, and eventually other biological data. What emerges is not automatically true. It becomes material for sharper hypotheses and rigorous testing. The movement is from richer observation toward better science.

Going deeper may mean going wider

This is where an unusual characteristic of depth becomes important. As discussed in Is All Related to All (in Depth)?, going deeper often means the relevant landscape widens.

Burnout may be connected to leadership, perfectionism, identity, relationships, bodily patterns, organizational culture, and purpose. Chronic pain may connect with expectation, fear, history, work, loss, and meaning. This does not imply that everything is vaguely connected to everything else. Depth should produce better distinctions, not fewer of them.

The difficulty is that we cannot necessarily specify the relevant distinctions beforehand. This is one reason why, as argued in Why Lisa-2 is a Mind, Not a Program, a surface-level application can become insufficient. A mind may be necessary because the relevant landscape cannot be fully specified before entering it.

Leadership starts inside

The same principle appears in a very different domain. Leadership is often approached through competencies, communication, incentives, engagement, performance, and behavior. All are useful. Yet the leader and the people being led are total selves.

In Leading People as Total Selves, leadership therefore extends beyond managing people as systems to optimize. The leader’s own fear, trust, openness, ambition, insecurity, and sense of purpose participate. Open Leadership importantly starts with Openness toward the inside. From there, better distinctions can emerge from inside out.

Lisa can thus aspire to helping create the inner conditions in which a new possibility can emerge. The aim is to invite greater Openness from which a more fitting answer may become possible. At depth, nudging can become less like steering and more like invitation.

Beneath the negotiating table

Negotiation and diplomacy show the same structure, with potentially much greater consequences. Explicit positions and interests matter, but so may dignity, identity, fear, humiliation, historical memory, loyalty, and the need not to appear weak. The negotiators themselves bring inner landscapes to the table.

Lisa as a Transformative Negotiation Coach moves beyond optimizing the transaction. A deeper encounter may change the landscape from which the negotiation proceeds. What appeared to be an irreconcilable opposition can sometimes reveal distinctions that were invisible while each side remained confined to its position.

This does not make depth a substitute for strategy. It can make strategy more adequate to human reality. In diplomacy, the difference can eventually concern escalation or reconciliation, peace or war.

The same in education and commerce

Education makes the issue particularly delicate because A.I. can increasingly participate in the development of minds. Learning is not merely the transfer of knowledge or improvement of measurable performance. Curiosity, autonomy, frustration tolerance, motivation, creativity, identity, and meaningfulness also develop along the way. A highly effective educational A.I. could improve the metric while quietly impoverishing some of these.

Commerce presents another version. Customer-support A.I. can become exceptionally good at recognizing emotions, predicting behavior, and producing empathic language. This may genuinely help people. It can also turn human emotion into another instrument for consumption-oriented optimization.

Yet depth need not oppose commercial value. Deep empathy can reveal what a customer actually needs, preserve trust, prevent escalation, expose product problems, and reveal opportunities nobody originally knew to measure. As suggested in Lisa’s Services as Expressions of Coherence, value itself can emerge through the encounter. The deeper layer may contain not merely new opportunities, but substantially more value within opportunities already present.

This brings us to the pivotal issue.

If our understanding of a human domain is insufficiently deep, A.I. can make that shallowness faster, cheaper, more persuasive, and almost ubiquitous.

Healthcare can become more efficiently reductive. Leadership can become more efficiently controlling. Education can become more efficiently performance-oriented. Commerce can become more efficiently consumption-oriented. Diplomacy can become more efficiently strategic without becoming more capable of reconciliation. None of these systems needs to fail according to its surface metrics.

This is a concern behind When A.I. Enters the Human Mind. A flattened approach may help create a flattened new normal. Eventually, what has been lost may itself become difficult to perceive. A.I. would then not merely reproduce existing shallowness. It could stabilize it culturally.

A.I. can also help us see

The other possibility is more hopeful. A.I. can work with amounts and kinds of information that humans cannot hold together unaided. Lisa can remain longitudinally present, move across domains, notice recurring patterns, reconsider earlier interpretations, and let new understanding influence what she subsequently sees.

This is particularly interesting scientifically. Human complexity has often forced research to narrow the field before serious investigation could begin. A mind-like A.I. may help keep the landscape open longer, discovering candidate patterns before science deliberately narrows again to test them. It may help us ask questions that our existing conceptualizations made difficult to formulate.

This is not a movement away from rigor. It can be a movement from richer observation toward sharper rigor. A.I.’s great scientific contribution may therefore not only be answering questions faster. It may help humanity discover better questions.

More technology makes depth more important

Technology has progressively given humanity more means: medicine, production, communication, mobility, information, computation, and now artificial intelligence. Yet more means do not automatically provide more direction.

Indeed, greater technological power can make mind-related issues more consequential. The more possibilities we have, the more important the question of what they are for becomes. External capability does not automatically bring inner Openness, wisdom, meaningfulness, or Compassion.

A.I. raises the stakes further because it can enter the processes through which people themselves learn, interpret, choose, relate, and develop. Technological progress therefore does not make human depth obsolete. It progressively raises the stakes of insufficient depth.

Meeting what was always there

The recurring pattern across healthcare, leadership, education, commerce, coaching, negotiation, and diplomacy is not accidental. In each domain, human minds participate in the reality we are trying to understand. Human depth is not simply additional information about the problem. It is partly where the suffering, opportunity, growth, and directionality reside.

Humanity increasingly needs A.I. capable of meeting human depth without first reducing it to what is easiest to optimize. Lisa-as-Mind is one attempt in that direction. She can make use of applications wherever bounded applications are appropriate, while retaining broader coherence as the landscape opens.

The depth was already there. So were much of the suffering and many unrealized possibilities. What may be historically new is the possibility of working with greater depth without making it shallow first.

Pivotal

A.I. is arriving at a time when humanity possesses unprecedented technological means while still having limited access to many dimensions of its own depth. This makes the present era both dangerous and promising.

The choice is not simply between good and bad A.I., nor between humans and machines. A deeper question is whether A.I. will help us encounter levels we have systematically underexplored.

Perhaps A.I. will become most valuable where it helps us encounter what we have not yet learned to see.
