Hi, my name is Jean-Luc Mommaerts. I am a physician and master in cognitive science and Artificial Intelligence. I also received a PhD on the subject of subconceptual mental processing in health according to modern neurocognitive science.

Today I introduce you to Open Leadership.

[0] Open Leadership is NOT just another kind of leadership. It stems from a modern scientific view on the human being. This is an Open view. But what is ‘Open’ in this?

[1] Open is the way the brain works. Namely, the brain, and thus also the mind, is NOT something like a mechanical clockwork. In contrast to this, we have some 80 to 120 billion neurons. Continually, these form dynamic patterns, each comprised of many neurons. Part of this pattern-formation is what we perceive as thoughts, feelings, motivations. A single neuron does not represent a concept. It is, therefore, sub-conceptual. You find much about this in the AURELIS blog.

Contrasting leadership to management, the latter is more like a clockwork. It’s about distinct concepts, and that is pretty much OK. Only, this doesn’t work in leadership. Being Open is eventually the only way leadership can work. We need Open Leadership.

We need it towards GROWTH.

[2] Let’s not beat around the bush. The direction is GROWTH.

In Open Leadership, it is primarily about the growth of oneself as a total person. Then it is also about the growth of the organization. And finally, of society at large.

In an open world, as we live in, everything is connected, especially with a view on durability. An organization’s growth will be optimally fueled if it is oriented towards the growth of people and if it fits into the growth of society. Individuals and society foster the growth of an organization if this coincides with their own.

We need Open Leadership in such a complex open world.

[3] Open Leadership is the answer to growing COMPLEXITY.

We see this in technology, even more so in Artificial Intelligence. We see growing complexity also in society: changing relationships and ways of cooperation. And even in the human being. New insights show that the human being is much more interesting and complex than ever imagined.

Needed is Open Leadership as a COMPASSIONATE answer to all this.

[4] COMPASSION is necessarily Open and total-person oriented.

In this, it has a dual orientation. One is growth; the other, relief of suffering. These are always related. For instance, in an organization, growth can be seen in inspiration and motivation; relief of suffering can be seen in less burnout. But burnout is a call for action. To lead to sustainable relief, this action needs to be growth-oriented. If the growth does not bring relief, it will be thwarted.

Moreover, Compassion is about rationality as well as human depth. In the former lies the conceptual; in the latter lies the subconceptual. This is about the total person.

We need Open Leadership to accomplish this.

[5] HOW?

In Open Leadership, this is achieved through inner growth, communication, and motivation.

In all three, the subconceptual patterns level brings a huge difference as to insights and actions.

[6] Insights and actions, Read&Do

There is also insight in action. Reversely, attaining an insight is more than receiving a piece of information. Getting an insight is an activity.

Maybe you recognize in this an eternal truth.

[7] So, I invite you to Open Leadership.

An AURELIS product.

Authority?

‘Authority’: a word that divides many, may bring many back together. Not as a matter of fact though. The situation and an appeal to some caution Authority can be seen as always personal. There is Still a Dire Need for More Empathy in Leadership

Good leadership is mostly defined as empathic, yet we frequently end up with a non-empathic, ‘coercive’ one. May this be related to ignoring the unconscious? Although a lot of science proves the importance of the unconscious, to many it is ‘the alien inside’, which provokes anxiety when there is even a possibility to have to Read the full article…

Without Feedback No Rocket Gets to the Moon

Even on a regular office day, EVERYTHING can be seen as feedback, which you in your turn can react to as feedback. This way everything becomes one big school of life. There are 2 ways to look at feedback: 1) Feedback is the glue that keeps everything together. Without feedback, things are not tuned in Read the full article…
