{"id":6819,"date":"2021-06-30T16:12:04","date_gmt":"2021-06-30T16:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/?p=6819"},"modified":"2023-11-07T13:58:19","modified_gmt":"2023-11-07T13:58:19","slug":"compassion-basically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/empathy-compassion\/compassion-basically","title":{"rendered":"Compassion, Basically"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3>This text and diagram form an entry to the basic idea of Compassion as I write about in <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/?s=compassion\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">many blogs<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Compassion is SO <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=12227\">much more than pity<\/a>. Compassion is also <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=7606\">more (going deeper) than empathy.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preliminary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the following diagram is but a mnemonic coat rack. It needs the proper coats for any correct understanding. Some of these are more intellectual, others more pragmatic, to be grasped by doing. Note also the why-what-how as an additional tool for memorization. Finally, the whole can be subsumed as &#8216;radically and ethically taking into account and caring for the total person.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I write Compassion with a capital C because <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=1420\">subconceptual<\/a> processing is involved, making it a <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=3591\">complex<\/a> concept. One should never underestimate this complexity, especially not in Compassionate practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The one(s) towards which Compassion is felt can be any sentient being(s) \u2015 even metaphorically. Conceptually, it can also include, for instance, a child having Compassion for a doll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Empathy is an important part of Compassion. See \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=6194\">From Mirror Neurons to Mirror Brain<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, when talking to another person, one may consciously capture the conceptual content. Meanwhile, non-consciously, one captures much more: thousands of details and many meaningful patterns within this abundance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metaphorically speaking, Compassion leads to a profound overlap of mental patterns, for instance, while talking. One can see these as transparent blueprints that more or less resemble each other. Their resemblance can be appreciated by (mentally) overlaying them, bringing forward differences and similitudes just by looking \u2015 no calculations needed, just looking in a deep, Compassionate way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This appreciation can be done in one or two directions in the case of talking. <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=5383\">AURELIS-coaching<\/a> makes this into art and science. This way, the coach responds to the coachee and invites the coachee to be responsive to the coach. Bidirectional pattern recognition forms a deep-to-deep communication whereby the coachee can change\/grow from the inside out, supported by the coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethics is of prime importance in this, as it is in any Compassionate endeavor. For instance, in a coaching situation, none of both should lose oneself in the other person. Both should grow from the process, each time again. There should be no instrumental changing of the mind, no reprogramming of any sort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Compassionate attitude<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compassion encompasses feeling but is not restricted to this. It is an attitude in which feeling and thinking are deeply intertwined. Within the \u2018what,\u2019 rationality may seem more related to thinking, depth more to feeling. In reality, both are so much intertwined that the distinction becomes less important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resulting attitude also includes a natural propensity for action with a profoundly spontaneous flavor. Understanding Compassion makes one see that there is nothing egoistic in this \u2014 quite the contrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What about Lisa? [see: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=2486\">Lisa<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u201d]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a matter of fact, Lisa\u2019s being Compassionate is different from any human case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, \u2018pattern recognition and completion\u2019 forms the basis of Lisa\u2019s inferencing. Through specific ways of working this out, Lisa can guide the user towards self-Compassion. Thus, per the diagram, the user may gradually feel Lisa having a Compassionate attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The goal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have noticed \u2018engenders\u2019 in the diagram. In my view, a Compassionate person naturally invites others to become (more) Compassionate too. Compassion engenders Compassion. With many people involved, this can become a self-perpetuating pattern within a community. At present, I frequently see the reverse, non-Compassionate pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, in healthcare, this makes it more important to give attention to the why-how-what of healing, especially in relation to empathy and placebo.
