Mind and body: no strangers, Sir, no strangers at all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Even to this day, to many -most?- people, mind and body seem to be very much NOT profoundly connected to each other. Mind being unphysical and \u2018volatile\u2019, body being <em>only<\/em> physical and very, very concrete. So how can the unphysical influence the physical?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That\u2019s the question.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And what an incredibly weird question it is!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0\u2018Time\u2019 is unphysical. So how can it influence matter? Nevertheless we see that all things change in the course of time. Does \u2018time\u2019 change these things?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Of course not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The crux is that unphysical \u2018things\u2019 can indeed not change physical things. Time cannot change matter. Mind cannot change matter. Mind can NOT change the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Hurray!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But you\u2019re not rid of me yet\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2018Time\u2019 is nothing but an abstraction that we humans use to enable us to better understand \u2018change\u2019 itself. Things change. We see the change. We call into being an abstraction with which to structure this change in our, well, \u2018mind\u2019 of course. We even give this abstraction a name: \u2018time\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Smell a rat yet?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2018Mind\u2019 is nothing but an abstraction that we humans use to enable us to better understand what our body does in certain, really very complex ways, like writing or reading and \u2018thinking\u2019 about it. The body changes. We see the change (such as: the throwing away of this piece of writing). We call into being an abstraction with which to structure this change in our, well, \u2018mind\u2019. We even give it a name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Yep. \u2018Mind\u2019 only exists in \u2018mind\u2019 itself\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026 which makes it a bit weird, but only slightly. In the end, what we call \u2018mind\u2019 is unphysical and only an abstraction made by ourselves. This abstraction cannot do anything, let alone change our body. But nevertheless the body changes and it clearly changes also by that what engenders the abstraction \u2018mind\u2019, namely: the body itself. Or should we say: it\u2019s \u2018time\u2019 that does all the changing? Well, it\u2019s your choice, but I wouldn\u2019t complicate things too much either.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So what is going on in the end?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The body changes itself, also in really insanely complex ways. Some of these insanely complex ways are better understood if we for simplicity\u2019s sake start talking about \u2018mind\u2019. There is nothing wrong with this, as long as we don\u2019t make any one of two mistakes: either to think that \u2018mind\u2019 is really something unphysical that influences the physical, or to think that \u2018mind\u2019 is really something unphysical and therefore <em>unrelated<\/em> to changes in the physical world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u25ca\u25ca\u25ca<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Mind IS related to bodily changes, and very deeply so, because that\u2019s what the abstraction we made in the first place, is all about. There is even no real obligation to make this abstraction. But then we end up with, in the end, an even much more complex problem of communication about many things.
