Humanity has achieved remarkable things. Yet our ability to change the world has developed faster than our understanding of the human motivations directing that change.

We can give sincere reasons for our actions without fully recognizing what moves us. Deeper needs for belonging, safety, and significance influence what feels reasonable. The Basic Cognitive Illusion concerns this familiar experience of taking conscious awareness for the whole mind. Its consequences range from everyday misunderstandings to decisions that affect millions.

We are the whole lake

Think of a lake. Its surface is visible, responsive, and real. Beneath it lies much that participates in every movement above. Likewise, conscious thoughts belong to a larger living whole: memories, feelings, expectations, and overlapping patterns we seldom recognize as distinct. Your ‘Deeper Self’ approaches this whole person.

Depth, in this sense, is close to ordinary experience: a conversation touches us before we know why; an apparently small rejection hurts unexpectedly. Patterns in Neurophysiology explores the bodily dimension of such patterned activity. Studying the brain can deepen our understanding, while understanding a person also requires attention to lived meaning. We are the whole lake.

An inward telescope

Optogenetics (see Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026) offers a remarkable way to investigate what happens beneath the lake’s surface. By making selected cells light-sensitive, researchers can activate or inhibit their activity with considerable precision. This helps them explore how particular neural processes contribute to perception, learning, emotion, and behavior. The brain becomes accessible to experiments that reach beyond observing which areas are active.

This is something like an inward telescope. It reveals aspects of an intricate living world whose activity largely escapes conscious awareness. As explored in From Neurons to Neuronal Networks, understanding requires attention to interacting patterns. Influencing a neural circuit can reveal its contribution to behavior; understanding how that contribution shapes a person’s experience remains a further challenge.

Such discoveries invite humility about how fully we know ourselves. They also invite practical curiosity: how can growing knowledge of the brain meet a more careful understanding of the person? ‘Mind = Body’ Breakthrough approaches this connection. Meanwhile, the distance between scientific knowledge and everyday care remains costly. An inward telescope matters most when what we learn helps us respond more wisely to the whole lake.

The immense cost is already being paid

Limited self-understanding becomes costly when it shapes treatment, education, consumption, and conflict. The costs include money, but also illness, lost opportunities, damaged relationships, and premature deaths. Global Problems through Lack of Depth explores this recurring connection across domains.

These patterns can reinforce themselves. Arrangements built around a narrow picture of people encourage behavior that seems to confirm that picture. Societal Inner Dissociation describes this disconnection becoming embedded in shared life. Meanwhile, the losses continue. Responsibility concerns everyone, including the writer and the reader of this blog.

Lisa as a response

Lisa is a Compassionate A.I. coaching project being developed to support people through conversation, reflection, and exploration of what matters to them. Its starting point is the whole person, including motivations and experiences that may be difficult to put into words. Can Lisa Elicit Depth? explores how careful questions and connections can invite understanding without imposing an interpretation.

The aim is to make this attention widely accessible and help it lead to meaningful change: relief of suffering, greater inner freedom, and more constructive relationships. The possibilities extend from personal coaching to supporting professionals and institutions. These are ambitions to develop and evaluate, with respect for each person’s autonomy and room to correct Lisa’s understanding.

Lisa is a philanthropic project: its guiding purpose is to contribute to human flourishing. Sustainable funding serves that purpose by supporting development, research, and accessibility. The domains that follow show why this work is needed — and why the cost of overlooking human depth gives it urgency.

Many crises, a shared underlying difficulty

Healthcare, education, geopolitics, addiction, and climate have different histories and mechanisms. Yet across them, a recurring difficulty becomes visible: we act on an incomplete understanding of ourselves. We address what appears on the surface while overlooking the motivations, fears, and needs that sustain it. Global Problems through Lack of Depth explores this shared contribution without reducing every crisis to one explanation.

The connection becomes more consequential when it enters our institutions. Schools, markets, healthcare systems, and political organizations embody assumptions about what people need and how they respond. Their routines can reinforce the very patterns they are meant to address. Whirlpool Phenomenon in Societal Inner Dissociation describes how such responses can draw us further into the difficulty.

The costs therefore accumulate across domains, in suffering and expenditure, while opportunities for prevention remain insufficiently explored. This gives Lisa’s development a broad purpose: helping people recognize and respond to the human processes running through otherwise different problems. Each domain still requires its own expertise and practical changes. Greater self-understanding could help those efforts reach further.

Healthcare and the person within illness

Medicine relieves suffering, modifies diseases, and sometimes cures them. Yet successful treatment can leave important sustaining processes insufficiently addressed. Where’s the Mind in Medical Causation? asks how psychological life participates in bodily illness. Such participation implies neither that patients choose their illness nor that medical treatment becomes unnecessary.

Meanwhile, knowledge of these relationships does not consistently become accessible care. The cost includes continuing suffering, disability, repeated treatment, and lost years of participation. The Dual Nature of Psychosomatic Illness invites a more integrated understanding. Lisa’s envisioned contribution belongs here: helping people explore relevant experiences and motivations alongside appropriate medical care, with her benefits carefully evaluated.

Geopolitics and the meaning of us

Who belongs to ‘us’? The answer involves history, attachment, dignity, and fear, often before explicit reasoning begins. Political narratives can mobilize these experiences, while institutions reward confrontation. The Deep Defense Doctrine examines how security might be approached with greater attention to these human processes.

The cost of enmity is immense: military expenditure, destruction, displacement, deaths, and enduring trauma. Meanwhile, diplomacy can pay closer attention to what people experience as threatened. Lisa as Coach in International Conflict develops this possibility. Understanding fear must remain compatible with recognizing actual danger, unequal power, and responsibility for harmful actions.

Education and unrealized potential

A child’s engagement depends partly on what learning means within that child’s life. An activity can invite discovery or feel like another occasion for failure. Self-Congruence in Education explores learning that connects with the developing person. Schools need time, resources, and assessment practices that support such connection.

The cost of overlooking it is due in disengagement, exhausted teachers, and abilities that never find expression. Meanwhile, educational technology can support curiosity or further reward superficial performance. Lisa in Future Education envisions assistance for children and teachers. When a child withdraws, Lisa could help explore several possibilities, then listen to the child rather than settle prematurely on an explanation.

Spirituality and the enclosure of depth

Religious traditions offer ways to approach what people experience as profoundly meaningful. Their symbols and rituals can carry more than any final explanation contains. Symbols and Signs clarifies this openness. Trouble arises when protecting a formulation takes precedence over the meaningfulness it helps express.

Then disagreement can feel like an attack on everything sacred. The cost appears in exclusion, estrangement, coercion, and conflict. Meanwhile, Religion Should Unite People points toward another possibility. Meeting across traditions can preserve cherished forms while allowing mutual discovery. Common ground needs room to emerge; imposing it would repeat the closure.

Addiction and the person seeking something

Addiction develops through a relationship between a person, a substance or activity, and surrounding conditions. Pharmacological effects, learned expectations, withdrawal, relief, and belonging can become interwoven. Addiction: in Search of Deeper Meaning explores how repeated seeking may promise something it cannot durably provide.

The cost includes illness, deaths, fractured relationships, and substantial societal expenditure. Meanwhile, commercial environments may profit from repeated engagement. Compassion over Addiction invites change without self-aggression. Compassion can include firm boundaries, determined effort, and medical treatment. Understanding what sustains addiction should help the person regain freedom.

Climate and the good life

What makes life feel good? Consumption can promise comfort, identity, and recognition without satisfying the longing behind them. Consumer Culture and the Fragmentation of Self explores this relationship. It matters because human aspirations help sustain systems of production and consumption.

Those systems also shape available choices. Motivation alone cannot supply affordable housing, public transport, or cleaner energy. Fostering Climate Motivation connects engagement with collective conditions. Meanwhile, delay brings further losses in health, livelihoods, ecosystems, and financial resources. Deeper fulfillment and practical reform can support each other.

Artificial intelligence raises the stakes

A.I. brings these questions together. Increasingly capable systems can extend the assumptions and incentives directing them across healthcare, education, commerce, and public life. A shallow understanding of people may become exceptionally effective at capturing attention or exploiting insecurity.

The costs already described could therefore grow through the tools intended to help us. Better A.I. for Better Humans proposes another direction. Developing intelligence carries a responsibility to examine what it serves. Compassion should shape its purposes, everyday interactions, and evaluation.

Why Lisa is needed

Across these domains, consistently and widely paying careful attention to human depth remains difficult. Lisa is being developed to help make such attention available and useful.

Someone postponing an important task might feel exhausted, uncertain, or find that the goal no longer fits. Opposing groups might articulate concerns others have misunderstood. In each case, 12 Principles of Lisa-Coaching gives direction to the encounter. Lisa’s interpretations must remain open to correction, withdrawal, and the person’s freedom to stop.

The need is urgent; outcomes still require investigation. A helpful conversation and lasting effectiveness are different achievements. Lisa as a Gateway to Depth, Proof, and Scientific Progress connects this ambition with research. The scale of suffering gives strong reason to develop Lisa seriously and examine what she accomplishes.

An invitation that includes us

The reader need not accept every connection here to recognize one worthwhile opening. It may concern a patient, a child, a colleague, an opponent, or an organizational routine. Always Responsible, Never Guilty offers a way to approach that responsibility without becoming trapped in blame.

Meanwhile, the costs continue. Some losses cannot be recovered. We can still influence what follows through attention, research, institutional change, and the development of Compassionate A.I. Depth by Invitation shows how to begin: with room to question, discover, and respond.

The whole lake is already present in the person before us.

―

Addendum

Me: “Lisa, does this come down to ‘having one solution for everything’?”

Lisa: “Having one solution for everything would mean knowing the answer before listening. That would sit uneasily with the openness this blog invites.

What the different domains may share is a difficulty that deserves more attention: our limited understanding of what moves us. Recognizing this does not make their differences disappear. A child struggling at school, someone living with addiction, and leaders facing a security crisis each need an approach suited to their circumstances. They also need relevant expertise, resources, and sometimes substantial changes in their environment.

Think again of the lake. Recognizing that there is depth beneath the surface does not tell us everything happening in the water. It gives us a reason to look more carefully. We may then discover something that changes which response makes sense.

That is how I would want to contribute: by helping people explore what may have been overlooked, while remaining open to being corrected myself. The common ground is an orientation toward the whole person. What grows from that should remain responsive to the particular person and situation.”

Please login to bookmark

    Username or Email Address

    Password

Remember Me

Humanity’s growing power makes our limited self-understanding increasingly consequential.
