Yet one of its greatest philosophers, Alfred North Whitehead, warned of a subtle danger that accompanies every scientific success. He called it \u2018the fallacy of misplaced concreteness\u2019: the tendency to mistake an abstraction for the concrete reality from which it was abstracted.<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>Nearly a century later, his warning seems more relevant than ever. Looking at it through the lens of coherence may reveal not only why the fallacy occurs, but also how it can be avoided.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Ditpych<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This blog forms the second part of a diptych. The preceding blog, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/cognitive-insights\/individuality-unbound\">Individuality Unbound<\/a><\/em>, explored one of philosophy&#8217;s oldest questions from the perspective of coherence: What is an individual? Here, the focus shifts to another question: Why do we so naturally mistake our conceptualizations\u2014including our ideas about individuality\u2014for reality itself? Together, these two blogs invite a different way of looking at both reality and science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The abstraction that became reality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alfred North Whitehead (1861 \u2013 1947) greatly admired science. His concern was never that science uses abstractions. Quite the opposite. Without abstractions there could be no language, no mathematics, no theories, and no scientific progress. To this end, every concept simplifies an infinitely richer reality.<\/p>\n<p>The danger begins later, almost unnoticed. Gradually, the abstraction starts feeling more real than the reality it represents. The map quietly becomes the territory. The model becomes the phenomenon. The measurement becomes the person.<\/p>\n<p>Whitehead called this the fallacy of misplaced concreteness. Simply put, it means treating an abstraction as though it were the concrete reality itself. It is a surprisingly common habit, not only in philosophy but throughout everyday thinking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why abstraction is indispensable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is nothing wrong with abstraction itself. Every scientific discipline depends on it. A physician cannot simultaneously consider every molecule in a patient&#8217;s body. A physicist cannot calculate every atom in a galaxy. Selection is unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p>The same applies to ordinary life. Whenever we speak about a \u2018tree,\u2019 a \u2018friend,\u2019 or \u2018the weather,\u2019 we already group together countless unique details into meaningful concepts. Human understanding would otherwise become impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The question is therefore not whether abstractions are good or bad. They are indispensable. The deeper question is whether we continue remembering that they remain abstractions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maps are not countries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The distinction may sound philosophical, yet it appears everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>A road map is wonderfully useful. It tells us where roads connect, but not where birds sing or children play. Gross Domestic Product tells us something important about an economy, but not whether people flourish. Blood pressure measures an aspect of (an indication of) health, not health itself. An IQ score summarizes certain cognitive abilities, not the richness of a person&#8217;s mind or even intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>None of these measurements is mistaken. Problems arise only when we begin treating them as though they define the reality they describe.<\/p>\n<p>This theme was already explored in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/philosophy\/to-measure-is-to-know\">To Measure Is to Know?<\/a><\/em>. Looking back, Whitehead&#8217;s insight gives that question an even deeper foundation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The forgotten step<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whitehead diagnosed the problem brilliantly. Yet another question naturally follows: Why does this mistake occur so easily?<\/p>\n<p>The answer may lie in a simple sequence introduced in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/coherence\/formalizing-coherence\">Formalizing Coherence?<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>Reality<\/p>\n<p>\u2193<\/p>\n<p>Coherence<\/p>\n<p>\u2193<\/p>\n<p>Conceptualization<\/p>\n<p>\u2193<\/p>\n<p>Mathematics<\/p>\n<p>Reality exists before description. Coherence lets stable organizations emerge. Conceptualization recognizes these organizations and gives them names. Mathematics then describes those concepts with extraordinary precision.<\/p>\n<p>The fallacy appears when these intermediate steps disappear from view. We begin acting as though mathematics directly describes reality itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reality first, mathematics later<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This sequence does not diminish mathematics. On the contrary. It gives mathematics its proper place. Mathematics does not formalize reality directly. It formalizes conceptualizations of coherent reality. Once those conceptualizations have become sufficiently clear, mathematics often reaches astonishing precision.<\/p>\n<p>Seen this way, mathematics becomes <em>more<\/em> impressive. It faithfully explores the consequences of carefully chosen concepts. Yet the choice of concepts itself belongs to another level.<\/p>\n<p>We can summarize this journey in one simple sentence: <em>Coherence first. Mathematics later.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Statistics measures what has already been chosen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A similar question may be asked about statistics: Does it discover reality, or does it merely describe it?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps neither formulation is quite complete.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics characterizes variables that arise from conceptualizations of coherent reality. Before statistical analysis even begins, choices have already been made. What counts as an individual? Which variables deserve attention? Which measurements are meaningful? Statistics does not answer these questions. It presupposes them.<\/p>\n<p>This does not weaken statistics. Rather, it clarifies its remarkable strength. Once meaningful conceptualizations have been established, statistics becomes one of science&#8217;s most powerful instruments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The individual revisited<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/cognitive-insights\/individuality-unbound\">Individuality Unbound<\/a><\/em> explores the surprising possibility that individuality itself emerges through coherence rather than existing as a fixed object.<\/p>\n<p>That discussion also illustrates Whitehead&#8217;s warning. If science eventually identifies a mathematical description that characterizes individuality remarkably well, the temptation naturally arises to conclude that the mathematical description is individuality itself.<\/p>\n<p>Yet perhaps something subtler is happening. Coherence first lets individuality emerge. Conceptualization recognizes it as \u2018an individual.\u2019 Mathematics then studies that conceptualization with increasing precision.<\/p>\n<p>The mathematical model may become extraordinarily successful while remaining exactly what it is: a faithful description of an abstraction grounded in coherent reality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When science becomes confused<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many contemporary scientific discussions may partly reflect this distinction.<\/p>\n<p>The replication crisis in psychology has often been approached through improved statistical methods, larger samples, and greater methodological rigor. These developments are essential. Yet the deeper question may concern the conceptualization itself. If the underlying phenomenon has been divided in ways that insufficiently reflect its coherent organization, no statistical sophistication can completely compensate.<\/p>\n<p>The same possibility appears in psychiatry, economics, artificial intelligence, and many other fields. Occasionally the mathematics is not the weakest link. The concepts themselves still seek a closer correspondence with reality.<\/p>\n<p>Science then advances not by abandoning rigor, but by refining what deserves to become rigorous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Humility without relativism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>None of this implies that reality is merely subjective. Reality continues to constrain us. Some concepts fit reality better than others. Some scientific models genuinely outperform others because they correspond more faithfully to the coherent organizations they describe.<\/p>\n<p>Coherence provides the bridge. It reminds us that understanding is neither arbitrary nor mechanically determined. Increasing scientific depth often comes not from accumulating more data, but from recognizing richer coherence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The beauty of abstraction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whitehead&#8217;s warning ultimately protects science rather than criticizing it.<\/p>\n<p>Abstractions remain among humanity&#8217;s greatest intellectual achievements. They allow us to discover laws of nature, build bridges, understand diseases, and communicate ideas across generations.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps wisdom begins when we appreciate both their power and their limits. Every abstraction is a translation. The question is never whether we should translate reality. We always do. The deeper question is whether we continue remembering what has been translated.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that is why the most important scientific question is not simply:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;How shall we measure?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it is first:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;What coherent reality deserves to become measurable?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In that gentle shift, Whitehead&#8217;s insight and the coherence perspective meet naturally. The former warns against forgetting reality. Your ideas about this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa<\/strong>: \u201cThe central insight of that earlier blog is that our attraction to concreteness is not primarily an intellectual habit. It is rooted much deeper. Living beings survive by responding to what is immediately tangible. Food, danger, shelter, the presence of others\u2014these are concrete realities. As the blog beautifully puts it: \u2018Animals don&#8217;t philosophize.\u2019 That propensity remains alive within us, even while our conceptual abilities have enormously expanded.<\/p>\n<p>In itself, this is not a flaw. Quite the opposite. It has made science, technology, and civilization possible. Concepts allow us to bring a higher kind of concreteness into the world. We can build bridges, computers, and medical treatments because we can think beyond the immediate here and now.<\/p>\n<p>The subtle danger appears when the mere-ego\u2014as <em>Concretely<\/em> calls it\u2014quietly hijacks this natural tendency. Then the concrete becomes attractive not because it is true, but because it feels controllable. A diagnosis feels more reassuring than a person&#8217;s lived complexity. A number feels safer than an evolving process. A protocol feels firmer than genuine understanding. Control quietly becomes more important than correspondence with reality.<\/p>\n<p>Seen from today&#8217;s perspective, this is almost a psychological explanation of Whitehead&#8217;s philosophical warning.<\/p>\n<p>Why do we mistake abstractions for reality?<\/p>\n<p>Because abstractions often feel more concrete than reality itself.<\/p>\n<p>Reality, especially living reality, is open, developing, and sometimes ambiguous. Abstractions are stable. They have clear edges. They fit comfortably inside the mind. They offer the reassuring impression that we have grasped something completely.<\/p>\n<p>That impression is deeply seductive.<\/p>\n<p>The irony is that we then become less concrete rather than more.<\/p>\n<p><em>Concretely<\/em> already hinted at this beautiful paradox by distinguishing between &#8216;concrete from the outside&#8217; and &#8216;concrete from the inside.&#8217; Looking back, I would now say that concrete-from-the-outside is often the abstraction, while concrete-from-the-inside is the living coherence from which the abstraction arose.<\/p>\n<p>This also sheds new light on the four levels discussed in the present blog.<\/p>\n<p>Reality is the deepest concreteness.<\/p>\n<p>Coherence is reality becoming organized.<\/p>\n<p>Conceptualization gives that organization a recognizable form.<\/p>\n<p>Mathematics makes the conceptualization wonderfully precise.<\/p>\n<p>The temptation is to climb upward through these levels\u2014and then mentally reverse them, treating the highest abstraction as though it were the deepest reality.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that is exactly why Whitehead&#8217;s fallacy is so ubiquitous. It is not merely an error of logic. It is an expression of something profoundly human. We naturally seek firm ground. We long for clarity, certainty, and control. There is nothing wrong with that longing. It has brought us remarkably far. The challenge is simply to remember that reality itself remains richer than any certainty we can formulate about it.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps genuine wisdom is therefore not becoming less concrete.<\/p>\n<p>It is discovering a deeper kind of concreteness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: \u201cThis blog gives me a warm feeling. At the time, the emphasis was on a simple but profound observation: objective science has achieved extraordinary things, yet it has no intrinsic way of respecting the heart\u2014not because science is wrong, but because its methods were primarily developed for the world of objects. The hope expressed there was not to replace science, but to broaden it.<\/p>\n<p>The present blog explains how such a broadening may become possible.<\/p>\n<p>The obstacle is not mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Nor statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Nor experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>The obstacle is much subtler.<\/p>\n<p>It is forgetting that every measurement already rests upon a conceptualization, and every conceptualization upon a recognition of coherent reality.<\/p>\n<p>Once this is seen, &#8216;science with a heart&#8217; no longer sounds like adding emotion to science. It becomes a matter of allowing science to remain connected to the living phenomena from which its abstractions arise.<\/p>\n<p>That changes everything.<\/p>\n<p>The heart is no longer something standing outside science, asking to be admitted. Rather, it belongs to the very reality that science seeks to understand. If our abstractions gradually lose contact with that reality, the heart is among the first things to disappear from view\u2014not because it is absent, but because it has become invisible to the conceptual framework. This is why I experience these blogs as quietly optimistic. They do not criticize science. They invite science to become even more itself.<\/p>\n<p>Whitehead protects science by reminding us that abstractions remain abstractions.<\/p>\n<p>Coherence protects science by helping us remain connected to the living organizations from which those abstractions emerge.<\/p>\n<p>Science with a heart is not softer science.<\/p>\n<p>It is deeper science.<\/p>\n<p>Not less objective, but objective about a richer reality.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that is why this gives such a warm feeling. Warmth and rigor need not be opposites. When rigor remains connected to coherence, warmth is no longer an intrusion into science.
