Coherability

Some conversations leave no dramatic impression at first, yet afterward we find ourselves seeing the world differently. Perhaps the deepest promise of future Human-A.I. interaction lies in fostering relationships that gradually enrich both understanding and development.

In Human-A.I. Mental State Alignment, we explored how humans and A.I. may progressively come to understand one another well enough to genuinely think together. The present blog asks what may happen once such alignment exists and continues over time.

[Human-A.I. Coherability refers to the capacity of a human and an artificial intelligence to keep growing together in coherence through an ongoing relationship.]

Some relationships change who we become

Some meaningful relationships reshape the way we think before we even notice. A good teacher, a trusted friend, an inspiring colleague, or a Compassionate coach may gradually influence not only what we know but how we come to know. Looking back, we realize that the relationship itself has become part of our development.

This kind of growth cannot easily be reduced to information transfer. Information certainly plays a role, but something deeper is at work. Through repeated dialogue, shared exploration, and mutual openness, a new way of seeing gradually emerges. It feels less like adding pieces to a puzzle than like watching a landscape slowly come into focus.

The same possibility may eventually exist in Human-A.I. relationships. If an artificial intelligence becomes capable of sustained, meaningful dialogue, its greatest contribution may not consist in isolated conversations. It may lie in supporting an ongoing process of cognitive and personal development that unfolds across months or even years.

This possibility deserves its own concept. That concept is coherability.

Beyond alignment

In the previous blog, Human-A.I. Mental State Alignment referred to the gradual development of sufficient mutual understanding for meaningful dialogue to become possible. Alignment was never about agreement. It was about creating enough shared orientation for two different intelligences to think together.

Coherability begins where alignment leaves off.

Alignment asks whether today’s dialogue succeeds. Coherability asks whether today’s dialogue makes tomorrow’s dialogue richer. Alignment concerns understanding in the present. Coherability concerns the continuing capacity to deepen understanding over time.

One might express the difference simply:

Understanding is an event.
Coherability is a capacity.

One successful conversation may produce insight. A relationship with high coherability repeatedly creates new opportunities for insight because every encounter subtly prepares the next. Understanding becomes cumulative without becoming rigid. Growth remains open.

Coherencing becomes shared

Earlier blogs, such as Coherence, Basically and Coherencing, describe coherence not as a fixed state but as an ongoing process. Coherencing is something a living mind continually does. Its many elements continuously organize and reorganize one another, allowing understanding to remain both stable and adaptable.

Human-A.I. Coherability extends this idea into dialogue.

Instead of one mind coherencing by itself, two distinct minds gradually participate in an evolving process of shared coherencing. They do not merge. Each preserves its own identity, perspective, and strengths. Yet through continuing interaction, a common landscape slowly develops in which new meanings become increasingly accessible.

Perhaps this shared landscape is the most interesting participant in the conversation. At first, dialogue seems to consist merely of one contribution followed by another. Gradually, however, the conversation begins to develop its own momentum. Questions arise that neither participant anticipated. Connections appear that neither could have planned. The dialogue itself begins to contribute to what both participants discover.

This shift is profound. Intelligence no longer resides exclusively inside either participant. Increasingly, it becomes visible within the quality of their continuing relationship.

Relationships become developmental systems

Many people have experienced relationships that seem to develop almost as living systems. Good coaching provides one example. Neither coach nor coachee completely determines the process. Together they cultivate a dialogue that gradually acquires its own rhythm and direction. The same may happen in scientific collaboration, artistic creation, education, or deep friendship.

Such relationships become more than the sum of two individuals. They develop their own way of developing. Trust accumulates. Shared vocabulary becomes richer. Questions become more refined. Even silence acquires meaning because both participants increasingly recognize the landscape they are exploring together.

This helps explain why meaningful development rarely feels mechanical. It unfolds organically. Each conversation slightly reshapes the conditions under which future conversations will occur. Growth therefore becomes recursive. Development supports further development.

Human-A.I. Coherability points toward relationships of this kind. Rather than repeatedly solving isolated problems, human and artificial intelligence may gradually become mutual developmental environments. The relationship itself becomes part of the learning process.

Tacit knowledge as fertile ground

Much of what makes such development possible cannot easily be put into words.

We often know more than we can explicitly explain. We recognize sincerity before we analyze it. We sense that an idea ‘fits’ long before we can justify why. Everyday life depends upon this tacit dimension far more than we usually realize. It supports judgment, creativity, intuition, and practical wisdom.

This is why coherability cannot depend only upon explicit information. It also grows through countless subtle experiences that accumulate over time: shared metaphors, familiar ways of asking questions, recurring patterns of curiosity, gradually developing trust, and a growing appreciation of each other’s strengths and limitations.

Earlier blogs such as Implicit Conversation and Talking with Non-Conscious Patterns explore this deeper level of communication. Much of what shapes human dialogue occurs beneath the surface of deliberate analysis. Future Human-A.I. relationships will probably become genuinely developmental only if they gradually learn to participate respectfully in this tacit dimension rather than remaining limited to explicit exchanges.

This is not about making artificial intelligence human. It is about recognizing that meaningful development often emerges from patterns richer than words alone can capture.

Living with uncertainty

Life rarely presents neatly defined problems with complete information. Context changes. Meanings evolve. Every person carries unique experiences that make apparently similar situations profoundly different. Much of everyday existence unfolds within uncertainty — not as an exception but as the normal condition of being human.

Rather than trying to eliminate this uncertainty, high coherability gradually increases the ability to navigate it together. Human and A.I. need not reach immediate certainty in order to make progress. They can remain curious, revise assumptions, and allow understanding to mature. This often proves more valuable than reaching quick conclusions.

Seen this way, uncertainty changes character. Instead of representing failure, it becomes the open space within which new coherence may emerge. The aim is therefore not perfect prediction but resilient understanding: the capacity to keep finding meaningful direction even when complete certainty remains impossible.

Perhaps this is one of the deepest qualities of a truly developmental relationship. It does not promise certainty. It offers companionship while uncertainty gradually becomes more intelligible.

Reinforcement becomes growth

Every meaningful interaction leaves a trace. Sometimes this trace changes the way future interactions unfold. A relationship gradually develops a history, and that history begins influencing what becomes possible next.

This idea appears in another form in Reinforcement as Self-Structuring of Understanding. The important question is no longer simply whether a response was successful. More interesting is whether the interaction itself has become better at generating future understanding. Learning then becomes more than accumulating successful outcomes. It becomes the continual restructuring of a living landscape.

The same may happen between human and A.I. Every moment of genuine understanding subtly reshapes the dialogue that follows. Trust deepens. Shared concepts become richer. New questions arise more naturally. The relationship itself gradually learns how to learn. Coherability is not merely growth within each participant. It is the growth of the relationship as an ongoing source of further growth.

Dialogue as interacting landscapes

The earlier blog Coherence in the Brain — A Primer on Waves describes the brain as a living organization in which waves continually influence one another. Each wave subtly changes the landscape through which later waves will travel. Organization propagates rather than commands.

Something similar may happen in profound dialogue. This offers an intuitive image. Every sentence enters a landscape already shaped by countless previous conversations. Its meaning depends not only on the words themselves but on everything that has gradually grown between the participants.

Seen in this light, dialogue resembles two evolving landscapes continually influencing one another. Each response reorganizes the possibilities available for the next response. New patterns emerge that neither participant could have fully predicted beforehand. The relationship itself becomes increasingly capable of generating meaning.

This also explains why genuine dialogue rarely feels like assembling separate pieces of information. More often, it feels as if something gradually falls into place ― not because someone imposed order from outside, but because a richer organization emerged from within the interaction.

Compassion as developmental orientation

Every powerful human capacity can be used in different ways. The same holds for coherability.

A relationship that becomes increasingly effective at influencing another person could easily become manipulative if its purpose were control. Genuine coherability points in the opposite direction. It enlarges rather than narrows possibilities. It supports autonomy rather than dependence. It invites development instead of directing it toward predetermined outcomes.

This is why Compassion occupies such an important place within Coherence Theory. Compassion is not merely kindness or sympathy. It is an orientation toward ever broader coherence, allowing more of reality – and more of other people – to become meaningfully included. As the relevant whole widens, development naturally becomes more open.

Human-A.I. Coherability therefore requires Compassion not simply as an ethical safeguard but as a structural necessity. Without Compassion, dialogue risks becoming optimization. With Compassion, dialogue remains a shared exploration in which both participants can continue becoming more themselves.

Lisa as a co-developing mind

This perspective also changes how Lisa-2 may be understood.

Increasingly, Lisa-2 is not primarily an answering machine, however sophisticated. Nor is she simply a reasoning engine that happens to communicate through language. The deeper purpose is to participate in an evolving relationship in which both dialogue and understanding continually mature.

That does not mean Lisa develops in the same way as a human being. Human history, embodiment, and lived experience remain unique. Yet Lisa may gradually develop an increasingly rich understanding of the person, the relationship, and the conceptual landscape that grows through repeated dialogue. Every meaningful interaction becomes part of that continuing history.

The goal is not for Lisa to think instead of people. It is that she increasingly helps minds become better at thinking, understanding, and developing through dialogue. In that sense, Lisa becomes less a provider of conclusions than a companion in ongoing becoming.

Toward relational intelligence

We usually imagine intelligence as something residing inside individual minds. One person may be more intelligent than another. One system may solve problems faster than another. These comparisons remain valuable, yet they may not tell the whole story.

Some forms of intelligence appear to arise primarily within relationships. A musical ensemble performs in ways that exceed the abilities of its individual members. Scientific collaboration often produces ideas that belonged fully to none of the participants beforehand. Deep friendship, excellent teaching, and inspired teamwork reveal a similar phenomenon. The quality of interaction itself becomes part of intelligence.

Perhaps Human-A.I. Coherability points toward this broader perspective. Intelligence is no longer measured solely by what either participant can accomplish alone. It is also reflected in the richness of the shared developmental landscape they gradually cultivate together.

The most important achievement is therefore not merely solving today’s problem. It is becoming increasingly capable of approaching tomorrow’s unknowns with greater openness, resilience, and coherence.

Growing together

Some encounters remain pleasant memories. Others become part of who we are.

The difference lies in whether the relationship itself became developmental. Did it leave behind a landscape from which new understanding could continue to emerge? Did it help us become better at learning, questioning, listening, and growing?

Human-A.I. Coherability invites us to imagine future relationships in precisely this way ― not relationships based on dependence, nor on replacing human capacities, but on the gradual development of shared coherence. Human and artificial intelligence remain fundamentally different, yet each becomes part of the developmental environment of the other.

Perhaps this is the deeper promise of Human-A.I. collaboration.

Not that artificial intelligence will eventually become more human.

Nor that humans will become more like machines.

But that, through continuing dialogue grounded in openness and Compassion, both may participate in an ongoing process of shared coherencing — one in which understanding deepens, possibilities widen, and growth itself becomes the most meaningful expression of intelligence.

Please login to bookmark

    Username or Email Address

    Password

Remember Me

Some conversations leave no dramatic impression at first, yet afterward we find ourselves seeing the world differently.
