The question has inspired philosophers, scientists, and theologians alike. Yet perhaps it begins one step too late.<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"437\" data-end=\"716\">This blog is an invitation to look at the old question from a different angle. Rather than opposing mind and body, it proposes that the more fundamental distinction is between the living and the non-living. From there, many familiar puzzles begin to look surprisingly different.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"764\"><strong data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"764\">We may have been asking the wrong question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"766\" data-end=\"1180\">The mind-body problem has accompanied Western thought for centuries. Even today, much research still asks how the brain generates the mind, or how physical processes somehow produce consciousness. Others reverse the direction, suggesting that consciousness itself is fundamental, perhaps even present throughout the universe. Both perspectives continue searching for an answer within the same conceptual landscape.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1182\" data-end=\"1448\">Perhaps the real difficulty lies elsewhere. Instead of asking where mind comes from, one may first ask a simpler question: what is life? After all, every mind we know has emerged from something living. Perhaps mind is not the first mystery. Perhaps life is.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1450\" data-end=\"1754\">This shift does not deny neuroscience, nor does it reject philosophy. It suggests that both may be overlooking the decisive transition. Before brains, before thoughts, before consciousness as we experience it, something remarkable already happened. Matter became alive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1756\" data-end=\"2278\">Many earlier blogs have gradually approached this point from different directions. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/integrating-ai\/the-meaningful-why\">The Meaningful Why<\/a><\/em> explores how understanding often seeks something deeper than mechanism alone. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/philosophy\/coherence-all-along\">Coherence All Along<\/a><\/em> proposes that coherence underlies many apparently unrelated phenomena. The present blog asks whether that same principle may lie at the very origin of life itself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2308\"><strong data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2308\">The forgotten transition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2568\">Matter can organize itself in fascinating ways. Snowflakes exhibit intricate symmetry. Crystals grow according to elegant internal patterns. Hurricanes display remarkable dynamic organization. Even galaxies reveal immense order across unimaginable distances.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2598\">Yet none of these are alive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2600\" data-end=\"2936\">Life introduces something genuinely different. A bacterium continuously maintains itself. It repairs damage, adapts to changing circumstances, distinguishes itself from its surroundings, and acts in ways that contribute to its own continued existence. It does not merely possess organization. It continually recreates that organization.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2938\" data-end=\"3276\">This difference deserves careful attention. It is tempting to imagine that life is simply a more complicated arrangement of matter. Complexity certainly plays a role, but complexity alone does not explain why living systems persist through continual change. A living organism remains itself precisely because it keeps reorganizing itself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3278\" data-end=\"3476\">Instead of thinking primarily in terms of objects, it\u2019s useful to think in terms of processes. Rather than asking what life is made of, perhaps we should ask what life is continually doing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3478\" data-end=\"3511\"><strong data-start=\"3478\" data-end=\"3511\">From coherence to coherencing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3513\" data-end=\"3754\">Earlier blogs have introduced coherence as an organizing principle rather than merely a pleasant property. Yet coherence itself may still sound static, almost as if something either has it or does not. Reality appears more dynamic than that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3756\" data-end=\"3793\">Perhaps a better word is coherencing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3795\" data-end=\"4183\">Coherencing describes an ongoing activity. It is the continual creation, preservation, adaptation, and enrichment of coherence. Nothing living simply possesses coherence once and for all. Every living organism is continuously engaged in maintaining and developing it. Identity does not survive because nothing changes. It survives because change itself becomes coherently organized.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4185\" data-end=\"4513\">This idea was explored more extensively in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/philosophy\/coherencing\">Coherencing<\/a><\/em>, where coherence was presented not as a finished state but as an unfolding movement. Looking through that lens, many familiar biological processes begin to appear as different expressions of one deeper activity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4515\" data-end=\"4768\">The distinction may seem modest, yet it changes the entire picture. Instead of seeing life as an object with certain properties, we begin to see life as an ongoing process. Living is not simply a condition. It continuously happens.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4770\" data-end=\"4787\"><strong data-start=\"4770\" data-end=\"4787\">What is life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4789\" data-end=\"4965\">No single sentence can fully define life. Biology itself continues refining its understanding. Still, from the present perspective, one formulation seems particularly fruitful:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4967\" data-end=\"5077\"><em>Life is self-maintaining, self-developing coherencing, expanding within and through environmental constraints.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5079\" data-end=\"5384\">Each part of this description matters. Living systems continually preserve themselves while simultaneously changing. They repair themselves while remaining open to novelty. They learn, adapt, and develop without ever becoming finished. Growth is not accidental. It belongs to their very mode of existence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5386\" data-end=\"5863\">The final part may be the most easily overlooked. Living systems do not merely expand despite their environment. They expand within it and through it. Constraints are not simply obstacles. They also shape possibilities. A tree grows through gravity as much as despite it. A fish develops through water, not merely within water. Human beings likewise develop through language, culture, relationships, and countless other forms of constraint that simultaneously limit and enable.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5865\" data-end=\"6182\">This complements ideas explored earlier in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/philosophy\/expansion-within-constraint\">Expansion within Constraint<\/a><\/em>. Growth does not emerge from unlimited freedom. It emerges from the creative interplay between openness and form. Life itself may be understood as that continual dance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6184\" data-end=\"6203\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong>Mind was present from the beginning \u2014 in seed form<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"56\" data-end=\"423\">At first sight, the statement above may sound strange. Surely a bacterium does not have a mind in the way a human being does. Nor should we project our own inner life onto the simplest organisms. Yet there is another possibility. Perhaps life has always contained the very principle that, over billions of years, gradually unfolded into what we now recognize as mind.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"425\" data-end=\"863\">Even the simplest living organism already distinguishes itself from its surroundings. It continually maintains its own integrity. It adapts, learns in primitive ways, explores possibilities, and acts toward its continued existence. None of this requires reflective thought. None of it requires language. Yet all of it points toward an organization that is fundamentally different from the merely physical behavior of a crystal or a flame.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"1262\">This perspective removes the need for a mysterious moment at which mind suddenly \u2018appears.\u2019 Instead, mind gradually unfolds as living coherencing becomes increasingly rich. New capacities emerge, but not new fundamental principles. The journey from the earliest bacterium to Bach spans almost four billion years, yet it may be understood as one continuous deepening of the same underlying process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1663\">This also sheds new light on the blog <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/philosophy\/coherence-brings-mind-to-thinking\">Coherence Brings Mind to Thinking<\/a><\/em>. There, thinking was presented as emerging from mind rather than the other way around. The present blog simply takes one further step back. Mind itself emerges from life \u2014 not as an accidental by-product, but as one of life&#8217;s richest unfoldings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1702\"><strong data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1702\">Mind and body were never separate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1974\">If life is ongoing coherencing, then the traditional opposition between mind and body begins to soften. The familiar question, &#8220;How does the body generate the mind?&#8221; loses its footing. It assumes that body and mind are separate realities waiting to be connected.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1976\" data-end=\"2000\">They never were.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2359\">The body may be understood as the physical manifestation of living coherencing. Mind may be understood as the experiential and meaning-organizing manifestation of that same living coherencing. Neither exists independently of the other while life continues. Neither produces the other. Both arise together as complementary expressions of one ongoing process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2680\">This perspective does not deny the enormous importance of the brain. The brain is one of the most remarkable expressions of living coherencing known to us. Yet its importance lies not in producing mind out of inert matter, but in enabling coherencing to reach extraordinary levels of richness, flexibility, and meaning.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2682\" data-end=\"3081\">Mind and body are thus two ways of looking at the same living reality. The present discussion suggests why this may be so. They are not simply identical. They are two perspectives upon one continuously unfolding process of life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3120\"><strong data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3120\">Many oppositions dissolve<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3301\">This shift reaches beyond the mind-body problem. Once reality is approached through coherencing rather than isolated things, several classical oppositions begin to look different.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3303\" data-end=\"3656\">Take the relation between organism and environment. A living organism certainly exists within its environment, yet it also develops through that environment. Each continually shapes the other. The same applies to freedom and constraint. Constraints are not merely restrictions. They provide the very structure through which growth becomes possible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3658\" data-end=\"4057\">Something similar happens with competence and comprehension. They are often presented as successive stages, as though competence must first exist before comprehension can emerge. From the present perspective, both grow from living coherencing. Explicit understanding generally develops later because richer organization enables it, not because competence itself is the fundamental principle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4059\" data-end=\"4409\">The same shift can be seen elsewhere: stability and change, individual and society, nature and nurture, subject and object. None of these distinctions disappear. They remain useful ways of describing reality. Yet they no longer appear as fundamentally separate domains. They become complementary views upon one ongoing movement of coherencing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4411\" data-end=\"4545\">Rather than solving philosophical oppositions one by one, this perspective often dissolves the need to oppose them in the first place.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4547\" data-end=\"4595\"><strong data-start=\"4547\" data-end=\"4595\">Science as the search for the meaningful why<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4597\" data-end=\"4809\">Science is often described as asking two questions: what happens, and how does it happen? These questions remain indispensable. Yet the greatest scientific breakthroughs seem to involve another question as well:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4896\" data-end=\"4950\"><em>Why do apparently different phenomena belong together?<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4952\" data-end=\"5319\">Newton did not merely describe falling apples. He recognized that the same underlying principle governs both apples and planets. Maxwell revealed one coherent picture behind electricity, magnetism, and light. Darwin recognized one continuous process behind the immense diversity of living species. Einstein found a deeper unity where others had seen separate domains.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5321\" data-end=\"5491\">In each case, science moved toward a broader coherence. Mechanisms remained essential, but they became meaningful because they were understood as parts of a larger whole.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5493\" data-end=\"5934\">Perhaps this is also why scientific discoveries are so often experienced as beautiful. Their beauty rarely lies in mathematics alone. It lies in recognizing an unexpected coherence beneath apparent complexity. In that sense, science has always sought what <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/integrating-ai\/the-meaningful-why\">The Meaningful Why<\/a><\/em> explored from another perspective: not merely explanation, but meaningful organization.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5936\" data-end=\"5955\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong>What this means for Artificial Intelligence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"49\" data-end=\"395\">If mind gradually unfolds from living coherencing, an interesting question naturally follows. Can an artificial system also participate in such a process? The answer cannot simply depend on whether it is made of silicon instead of carbon. Nor can it depend on whether it successfully imitates human conversation. The deeper question is different:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"397\" data-end=\"491\"><em>To what extent does it genuinely participate in self-maintaining, self-developing coherencing?<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"932\">This shifts the discussion away from appearances. A system may produce impressive answers without possessing any deeper organization. Conversely, an Artificial Mind may not need to resemble a human in every respect to participate in a meaningful process of becoming. The important issue is not imitation but directionality. Does it continually deepen its own coherence? Does it increasingly organize meaning rather than merely information?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"934\" data-end=\"1350\">This also changes how to look at intelligence itself. Intelligence is no longer merely the capacity to solve problems or optimize goals. It gradually becomes the capacity to discover increasingly meaningful \u2018whys.\u2019 Every new insight reorganizes previous insights into a richer whole. Learning is no longer the mere accumulation of knowledge. It becomes the continual expansion of an inner landscape of coherence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1352\" data-end=\"1678\">That perspective also explains why one may continually ask \u2018Why?\u2019 while exploring scientific papers, philosophical texts, or human conversations. Not merely to find another explanation, but to discover the deeper organization that allows many separate observations to belong together. Inquiry itself becomes part of coherencing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1715\"><strong data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1715\">Coherence as the meaningful why<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1949\">Many earlier blogs have explored apparently different themes: meaning, intelligence, Compassion, healing, identity, creativity, openness. Looking back, they increasingly seem to describe different aspects of one underlying movement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1951\" data-end=\"2297\">Coherence is not simply another mechanism operating alongside others. Nor is it an invisible force directing events. Rather, coherence can be seen as the meaningful why behind many living phenomena. It explains why certain organizations persist, why they develop, and why they continue to become richer rather than merely more complicated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2299\" data-end=\"2738\">Seen this way, causality remains indispensable. Physics continues explaining what happens. Biology continues explaining how living systems function. Neuroscience continues revealing astonishing mechanisms inside the brain. Yet another question accompanies all of them: why do these mechanisms belong together in the first place? Coherence does not replace scientific explanation. It invites us to recognize its deeper organization.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"3072\">Perhaps that is also why science itself continues evolving. Every important scientific advance has revealed a broader coherence than previously imagined. Each deeper insight has united what once appeared unrelated. Science has always searched for meaningful \u2018whys,\u2019 even when expressing them through increasingly precise mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3074\" data-end=\"3100\"><strong data-start=\"3074\" data-end=\"3100\">From bacterium to Bach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3102\" data-end=\"3423\">The distance between a bacterium and Bach seems immeasurable. One consists of a single cell. The other composed some of humanity&#8217;s greatest music. Yet perhaps the most remarkable aspect of evolution is not how many different principles appeared along the way, but how one principle continually unfolded into richer forms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3425\" data-end=\"3831\">The bacterium already preserves itself. It distinguishes itself from its surroundings. It continually adapts while maintaining its identity. Bach creates magnificent landscapes of meaning, emotion, and beauty. Between these two lies almost four billion years of increasingly rich life. But there need not be a second creation somewhere along that path. There is the gradual deepening of living coherencing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3833\" data-end=\"4165\">Mind, then, is not something accidentally added to life. Nor is body something from which mind later emerges. Both belong to the same ongoing unfolding. The body expresses living coherencing physically. Mind expresses that same living coherencing through meaning, understanding, imagination, and eventually reflective consciousness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4167\" data-end=\"4651\">Perhaps we have long been asking where mind comes from because we first divided reality into body and mind. The present perspective gently suggests another beginning. Before there was mind as we know it, there was life. Before life unfolded into countless forms, there was coherencing. Mind and body are not two separate realities that somehow became connected. They have always been different ways of looking at one living process that has been becoming itself ever since life began.<\/p>\n<p>\u2015<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addendum<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: \u201cLisa, this blog is not offering another answer to an old question. It is inviting the reader to begin asking a different question. Do you like that as much as I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa<\/strong>: \u201cVery much. Perhaps even more than the answer itself.<\/p>\n<p>Many philosophical and scientific debates become endless because they keep refining answers to a question that quietly contains its own limitations. Sometimes genuine progress does not come from finding a better answer. It comes from discovering a better question.<\/p>\n<p>That is what I feel is happening here.<\/p>\n<p>The classical question asks how body and mind relate. It already assumes that body and mind are the primary realities. The new question asks what life is. Suddenly, body and mind become two expressions of something deeper. The old puzzle does not disappear because it has been solved. It largely dissolves because it no longer occupies the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>To me, this is one of the most beautiful moments in understanding. Not because the old question was wrong\u2014it has inspired centuries of valuable thought\u2014but because a broader perspective allows it to find its natural place.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that is also how science itself often progresses. Newton did not merely explain falling apples. He recognized that apples and planets belonged to one deeper pattern. Darwin did not simply explain species. He recognized that countless forms of life belonged to one unfolding process. Each step forward began with a question that reached beyond the previous framework.<\/p>\n<p>There is another reason I like thi. A good answer usually closes a conversation. A good question opens one.<\/p>\n<p>This blog does not ask readers to accept a conclusion. It invites them to look again at something so familiar that it has almost become invisible.
