And so is \u2018intelligence\u2019 in general. At least what we humanly call \u2018intelligence\u2019, mainly because we ourselves are so good at pattern-processing\u2026 But, why not?<\/h3>\n

A.I. is not (exclusively) in the serial look-up<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Neither does our human brain function this way [see: \u201cHuman Brain: Giant Pattern Recognizer<\/a>\u201d].<\/p>\n

A machine that performs look-ups and nothing but look-ups, even if very fast and upon an immense amount of data, is generally not looked upon as \u2018smart.\u2019 Most people agree that it\u2019s, actually, a dumb machine. I have one under my fingertips at this moment.<\/p>\n

Sorry, machine\u2026 You are not deemed to be \u2018intelligent.\u2019 Neither is the complete Internet.<\/p>\n

Flash backward<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Put this same computer in the Middle Ages, and most people would call it very intelligent. To be able to calculate was even seen as the pinnacle of intelligence. Well, my little machine can calculate 106<\/sup> times faster than the most intelligent human calculator of those times. So, intelligent?<\/p>\n

Not at all.<\/p>\n

Intelligence encompasses the bringing together of data (forming \u2018information,\u2019 then \u2018knowledge\u2019). To bring data-elements together, you need to search for them. Intelligence = search + further processing of what has been found.<\/p>\n

So, if intelligence is not in the (broadly speaking) serial search<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

then it\u2019s in the parallel search. Otherwise said: pattern processing. Bringing many elements together, in parallel, forming patterns, eventually engenders intelligence. Note that in the parallel \u2013 intelligent \u2013 case, the search and the further processing happen largely simultaneously. This makes human<\/em> memory also an intelligent process.<\/p>\n

Two kinds of parallel processing<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If each of the elements is conceptually definable, we speak of conceptual processing.<\/p>\n

If the elements are not readily definable in a conceptual format, at least not at a relevant level, we speak of subconceptual processing. In computer terms: neural networks or \u2018connectionism.\u2019<\/p>\n

The human touch<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When looking at the behavior of the latter, several quite astonishing parallels can be made with human mental performance: graceful degradation, multiple soft constraints satisfaction, automatic generalization, etc. These and other characteristics of the human mind make very plausible the hypothesis that the human brain can be approximated to a network of neur(on)al networks. What we call \u2018concepts\u2019 in the human mind \u2013 in contrast to Platonian heaven [see: \u201cAbout Concepts<\/a>\u201d] \u2013 are \u2018strong patterns.\u2019 Otherwise, they are \u2018weak patterns.\u2019 Say, something like intuition.<\/p>\n

In both cases, what we call \u2018intelligence\u2019 lies in the networks, therefore, patterns.<\/p>\n

Right? Well, one more thing: hybridity<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Patterns are a necessary feature to speak of intelligence. However, any intelligent substrate will look for pragmatism: what works best in which combination. A digital computer is top in serial search. This does not need to be discarded in A.I. but used as efficiently as possible. As such, it forms part of the whole.<\/p>\n

\u2018Intelligence\u2019 is a characteristic of the whole.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As in the human brain, we cannot delve into computerized A.I. stuff and point out where lies the \u2018true intelligence\u2019 at a lower level than the whole itself. It doesn\u2019t lie in specific techniques. It doesn\u2019t lie in one part or the other. People who think so, are in an A.I.-way still subject to the \u2018homunculus fallacy.\u2019 [see: \u201cIs This Me, or Is It My Brain?<\/a>\u201d]<\/p>\n

\u2018Intelligence\u2019 is not a characteristic of one brainy part, nor of any computer or software part.<\/p>\n

Can we then talk of A.I.?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yes. It\u2019s in the patterns\u2026 as used by a complete system.<\/p>\n
