And in that silence lay an intimate tenderness, as if the water knew who I was and why I longed to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contextual glimpse<\/strong><br>Frederik van Eeden\u2019s novel follows Hedwig\u2019s turbulent life \u2014 from youthful sensitivity, through love and loss, to illness and moments of mystical yearning.
