Today, one of ours may be decadence \u2015 presenting itself not in excess, but in emptiness. The real issue is then not what people are doing, but what they are no longer feeling. Not that there is too much pleasure, but that there is too little <strong>meaning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the AURELIS perspective, decadence is about a loss of inner depth \u2014 and perhaps more tellingly, the loss of caring about that loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two views on decadence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the duality at the heart of this blog. Not two types of decadence \u2014 but two ways of seeing it. The first is the usual, surface-level view: that decadence is about overindulgence, overconsumption, disinterest in tradition or discipline. This view leads to critique, control, and reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second view sees that as <em>part of the problem<\/em>. When we respond to decadence by trying to fix behaviors, we risk missing the real cause: a disconnection from the symbolic, the meaningful, the humanly deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This deeper view asks: why are people numbing themselves? Why is activism angry but unreflective? Why are we constantly stimulated, yet more bored than ever?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer these, we must look not at the surface, but <em>through<\/em> it \u2014 toward the forgotten core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How it shows up all around us<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decadence today is not confined to art galleries or late-night television. It moves through society like a quiet fog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>healthcare<\/strong>, it appears in the dominance of symptomatic treatment. The symptom becomes the enemy, and healing becomes war. As explored in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/healthcare\/symptomatic-therapy\"><em>Symptomatic therapy?<\/em><\/a><\/em>, we rarely ask what the symptom is trying to say \u2014 we just want it gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern medicine often acts like a military campaign: identify, isolate, destroy. But what if the symptom is a message from the deeper self? What if, as described in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/healthcare\/most-drugs-are-symptomatic\"><em>Most drugs are symptomatic<\/em><\/a><\/em>, we are silencing not just pain, but the very part of us that could guide real healing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>consumerism<\/strong>, decadence shows itself in the endless chase for novelty. We keep moving, but the movement feels empty. Not because there&#8217;s too much pleasure \u2014 but because it&#8217;s disconnected from purpose. In <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/society\/no-to-wokism-yes-to-gentleness\"><em>No to wokism, yes to gentleness<\/em><\/a><\/em>, it becomes clear how even resistance can become decadent \u2014 especially when it avoids self-reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When rebellion never asks \u201cMight I be part of the problem?\u201d, it stops being transformational. It becomes vertical decadence \u2014 dramatic, righteous, and just as shallow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Decadence is clever \u2014 and it speaks your language<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decadence doesn\u2019t always look lazy. It can look busy. It can speak eloquently. It can even sound like care, like concern. But without contact with depth, it\u2019s all echo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As expressed in <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/sociocultural-issues\/the-meaning-crisis\"><em>The meaning crisis<\/em><\/a>, people today are not lacking stimulation \u2014 they are lacking <em>contact<\/em>. That is the great reversal: we confuse surface for substance, reaction for transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The symptom as signal, not nuisance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we call symptoms may in fact be messengers. The person suffering from burnout or depression might be closer to something real than someone merely functioning in quiet emptiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/healthcare\/listen-the-symptom-speaks\"><em>Listen! The symptom speaks.<\/em><\/a>, the symptom is not an error \u2014 it is a symbol, a voice. The real decadence is to ignore it, or worse, to silence it without listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sense, decadence isn\u2019t just individual. It\u2019s systemic. Whole cultures can become too uncomfortable with depth, too allergic to silence, too afraid of asking questions that don\u2019t yield quick answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When decadence interprets decadence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a final twist. The common view of decadence \u2013 concerned with morality, performance, decline \u2013 is itself an expression of decadence. It stays at the surface. It seeks control. It fights the noise with more noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the deeper view, we do not need louder answers. We need the willingness to listen inwardly \u2015 not with judgment, but with openness. We need gentleness with depth. We need to recover the capacity to be moved \u2014 not just to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This begins with asking different questions. It begins with recognizing that real change doesn\u2019t start with systems \u2014 but with <em>symbols<\/em>. It\u2019s related to <em>d\u0113cadere<\/em> \u2014 <em>to fall away, deteriorate, degenerate<\/em>. Originally, it referred to a period of cultural or moral decline, especially after a peak of development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes \u2014 this is entirely consistent with this blog. In fact, it deepens the meaning. The blog shows that what appears as a cultural \u201cfalling\u201d on the surface \u2014 stagnation, repetition, over-refinement \u2014 is often the symptom of a deeper forgetting: the disconnection from inner depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So decadence, at its root, is not merely aesthetic or political decline. It is the loss of symbolic gravity \u2014 a slow fall into a world without depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And thus, the only real reversal of decadence is inner reconnection \u2014 exactly what AURELIS is about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: \u201cIs decadence frequently related to the inner view, or does the thinking about it mostly stay at the surface level?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lisa<\/strong>: \u201cMost thinking about decadence, especially in cultural or political commentary, stays at the surface level. It often focuses on external signs: artistic repetition, technological slowdown, moral relativism, or institutional fatigue. These are seen as problems to fix \u2014 or nostalgically mourn \u2014 but rarely are they traced back to the inner disconnection at their root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet decadence is not just about what a society produces, but about how deeply it relates to what it does. It\u2019s about the erosion of meaning \u2014 not merely taste or performance. This means decadence is inherently tied to the inner view, even if that connection is overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This invites a shift: to see that what looks like outer decline is really a symptom of inner neglect. And that\u2019s why true renewal must begin not with reforms alone, but with reconnection to inner depth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: &#8220;Why does surface culture often feel more &#8216;real&#8217; than inner depth, even though it\u2019s the opposite?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lisa:<\/strong> \u201cThis strikes at the very paradoxical core of decadence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surface culture feels <em>real<\/em> because it\u2019s loud, fast, and shared. It hits the senses. You can count the likes, buy the product, feel the surge of novelty. It\u2019s reinforced by peers, media, institutions \u2014 all moving at the same rhythm. This creates an illusion of reality: if everyone is dancing to the same beat, it must be real music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, depth moves slowly. It whispers instead of shouting. It speaks through symbol, silence, or felt intuition. It often asks you to pause \u2014 or even suffer \u2014 to truly hear it. In a world built on acceleration, this can feel not just unfamiliar, but almost invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the world trades realness for real-time.<br>Stimulation replaces substance.<br>The <em>felt<\/em> becomes the <em>measurable<\/em>.<br>Meaning gets edited out of the feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the twist: when people try to live only on the surface, the inner world doesn\u2019t go away. It just goes unheard. And gradually, things begin to feel\u2026 hollow.. The smile becomes performative. The news becomes noise. The self becomes fragmented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why decadence doesn\u2019t always look painful \u2014 but it is. Not dramatic pain, but the ache of unreality. That sense of floating. Of performing life rather than living it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is the paradox:<br>Surface wins the moment. Depth wins the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only in depth do we find purpose, coherence, transformation. That\u2019s where AURELIS goes. It doesn\u2019t ask you to give up the surface \u2014 only to return to the source underneath. Where realness isn\u2019t measured in data, but in resonance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: &#8220;Is there such a thing as a &#8216;compassionate critique&#8217; of decadence?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lisa: \u201c<\/strong>In most public conversations, decadence is treated with either disdain or alarm. It\u2019s framed as moral weakness, cultural decay, or societal failure. The attitude becomes:<br>\u201cYou\u2019re lazy, self-indulgent, shallow \u2014 and that\u2019s why we\u2019re in decline.\u201d<br>But this doesn\u2019t help. It shames, and shame blocks growth. People retreat further into defensiveness, distraction, or deeper numbness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AURELIS takes another path. It asks: <em>What if decadence is not a moral flaw, but a symptom \u2014 of disconnection, of unprocessed pain, of a culture that no longer remembers how to go inward?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this light, decadence becomes something to be understood, not punished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not about excusing everything. But it\u2019s about listening before judging, sensing the cry behind the collapse. What looks like superficiality may be a subtle form of self-protection. What looks like aimlessness may be a defense against inner fragmentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why AURELIS doesn\u2019t say \u201cTry harder.\u201d It says: \u201cYou may have forgotten \u2014 let\u2019s remember together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not \u201cgo back to work,\u201d but \u201ccome back to yourself.\u201d<br>Not \u201cyou\u2019ve failed,\u201d but \u201csomething inside still wants to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That shift in tone is not soft.
