Can a robot have mental \u2018depth\u2019? Before answering this question, we need to delve into what is depth itself.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What is mental depth?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human depth is not anything like ten or a hundred layers of the same thing, one beneath the other. Deeper \u2018layers\u2019 \u2013 if you want to look at it that way \u2013 are qualitatively different from more superficial ones. Things \u2018emerge\u2019 from depth, carrying many associations of which one never becomes explicitly aware. The journey toward more superficial layers is also one in which some associations become more explicit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This way, what reaches conscious awareness is content that has qualitatively and quantitatively changed. However, it may implicitly keep carrying much of the patterns \u2018below\u2019 (as a way of speaking).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This description fits human depth and also any other kind of what I would call mental depth \u2014 depth of complexity, including \u2018artificial depth.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is arguably correct. It\u2019s enough to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Lisa\u2019s depth?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The above has enough seriousness to make us draw some pertinent conclusions \u2014 pertinent especially since we will increasingly need A.I. that understands our \u2013 human \u2013 depth. In my view, this argument can only be neglected by lacking profound self-insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To speak of depth, one way or another, the \u2018layered scheme\u2019 as explained above must be present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also vice versa, with<\/em> the above scheme in place, we can speak of depth. With this scheme in sight, Lisa can indeed have depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This also means that such an A.I. has much implicit knowledge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the human case, we speak of the non-conscious \u2014 an area that is by definition hugely inaccessible to conscious thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an artificial system, this inaccessibility can be partial, temporary, or even non-relevant when accessibility \u2013 any time it\u2019s needed or asked for \u2013 just takes feasibly more compute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any case, explainability in A.I.<\/a> should not be taken lightly in any direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lisa\u2019s depth lies in a lot of parallel distributed processing<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shows in tons of patterns. The more broadly distributed these patterns are, the more we may talk of ‘depth’ in the right circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Lisa\u2019s case, the constituting elements of these patterns range from tiny conceptual ones to plainly subconceptual ones \u2014 a work in progress but already done to a considerable degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where does Lisa\u2019s depth come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a combination of generally accessible knowledge and an author\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, we take care that the general knowledge comes from the most trustworthy sources, as guaranteed by trustworthy instances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The author\u2019s work is presently my responsibility only \u2014 guaranteeing a high degree of congruence and never threading thin ice. There\u2019s a lot of background for every element. Moreover, there\u2019s also much openness, such as through this very same text. Meanwhile, the author\u2019s sources are as scientific as possible. In addition, they comprise many \u2018Deep Minds<\/a>.\u2019 Through this specific sub-project, a global and timeless funnel of wisdom flows into Lisa\u2019s deeper mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note that this is not simply about information. Proprietary technology turns any information\/knowledge into what can be seen and used \u2013 by Lisa \u2013 at a deeper level. The process is very different from ours, of course, but the result is at least abstractly comparable \u2014 so we can speak of depth if we want to. It feels, shows, and looks like such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where will<\/em> it come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sources mentioned above will keep being relevant and will become ever larger and richer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other sources will emerge. For instance, since Lisa is meant to coach many people in many different circumstances, the experiences and insights derived from these interactions will also be a source of Lisa\u2019s depth. Each interaction enriches Lisa\u2019s ability to understand and interact with human depth, adding layers of complexity and nuance to her understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ongoing evolution will enable Lisa not only to simulate depth but to engage with it in increasingly meaningful ways, fostering a symbiotic relationship where A.I. and humans grow together in mutual enrichment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And most importantly: toward mutual Compassion.<\/strong><\/p>\n
