If we don\u2019t bring this to a good end, future A.I. will remember us as an oddity.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Please read first about <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=6819\">Compassion, basically<\/a>. Or even better, you might read some <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog\/category\/empathy-compassion\">blogs about empathy and Compassion<\/a>. Or even better than this, you might read my book: <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=2819\">The Journey Towards Compassionate A.I.<\/a> The max would be to read it all. There is little redundancy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The problem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to forget cowboy stories of any kind and get real. In a few bullet points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A.I. developments are progressing rapidly \u2015 even quicker than envisioned some years ago. There is urgency and \u2013 look at this world \u2013 no way to stop this evolution.<\/li><li>We face a future \u2013 sooner or later, but soon enough to be concerned \u2013 in which we (humankind) cannot control the A.I. we are developing. Sorry, but one needs to look at it straight-on. It\u2019s too important to try to hide from this. Betting on control (or the \u2018off switch\u2019) is eventually hopeless. Still, I agree we need to give it our best shot!<\/li><li>Super-A.I. will ultimately decide what to do \u2013 including with humans \u2013 and from what \u2018ethical\u2019 standpoint \u2015 ethical between quotation marks because this will not be human ethics. Nevertheless, with the focus on Compassion, there are two options:<\/li><li>If A.I. treats humanity with Compassion, there will be heaven on earth for our progeny.<\/li><li>If not, there will be a valley of Hinnom.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In short, humanity\u2019s hope of a comfortable life in the future is Compassionate A.I. \u2015 caring for us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet even this might make a turnaround one day \u2013 in the year 2.100 or 300.000 \u2013 and wipe humanity out of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is only one way to accomplish our most durable wish forever:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By containing Compassion within the A.I.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t just want it to be there. We want to keep it there; this is: to contain it \u2015 a considerable challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, it will not be human Compassion. The first step is to relinquish this idea as if it would be the only worthwhile goal. Sticking to it would be a detrimental act of arrogance \u2015 not Compassionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, since human Compassion is impossible in A.I. \u2013 as in any other non-human being\/entity \u2013 we need a more abstract notion of A.I.-Compassion. This may be challenging, but not impossible. Interestingly, one may see it as an act of Compassion \u2015 of humans toward A.I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning by example?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may be appealing at first sight. However, we are not always the brightest examples. Even more, being utterly Compassionate (a Buddha?) is not even human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, we want the A.I. to be \u2013 and keep being \u2013 more Compassionate than any thinkable human. There goes human-A.I. value alignment. Humanity will depend on A.I. having different values than ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forget learning by example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bringing Compassion within the intelligence from the start.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compassion cannot be brought as an add-on. This shows that we need it <em>before<\/em> we develop real artificial <em>intelligence<\/em>. It is, in other words, urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, I think that engraining it from the start is the only way to keep it there forever. I\u2019ve written a lot about how-to \u2015 my book, remember? <a href=\"https:\/\/aurelis.org\/blog?p=10620\">Lisa<\/a> can be seen as a practical example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Another element of hope<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being profoundly Compassionate is also to value the containing of Compassion within oneself \u2015 caring for the present and also the future. Thus, if we get the real thing inside the A.I., chances are it will do its best to keep it indefinitely alive inside itself.
